HEALTH AND WELLNESS TOPIC.20
SHADOWS AND COLOURS, an art workshop project which began under the initiative of two women, who want to contribute to their neighborhood. This series of articles is about their work, one as an art therapist, the other as a specialized educator. We will introduce the workshop and the interview we did with one of them over the next few weeks. Enjoy!
PART ONE:
Painting is not producing “art” but an action in which the unconscious of man surrenders itself directly and by which the artist unites as much with the animal world than the plant world. » Pollock does not want to work according to nature but rather like her, parallel with her “I take into consideration the rhythms of nature … I work from the inside to out, just like nature.”
J. Pollock
The experience takes place in the heart of a neighbourhood school. A neighbourhood built in the seventies, as so many others in France. A population stranded there accumulates social, economic, cultural problems …. This work experience begins in a specialized prevention context and meets the team criteria of offering original answers to the population as well as the partners.
We are two women who have inhabited this territory professionally for several years. It’s from a special educator and art therapist standpoint that we have proposed an art workshop as a place of prevention and creativity for children enrolled in one of the neighbourhood schools. This workshop enrolled 18 children whose involvement lasted from one to four years.. These children come from different cultural worlds: Senegal, Mali, Turkey, Berry, Martinique, Morocco ….
It is the establishment of an area taking into account the risks of mental suffering as well as the creative potential of children growing up in this neighbourhood.
We thought that based on the creative potential of each, accompanying children in their development of this potential, we would participate in their growth.
This article reflects a four year experience centered on the creation of a plan to create an area of reverie and tranquility a bit apart in the school, to focus on pleasure, discovery, exploration without putting the emphasis on achievement.
This allows us to perceive how a child “thinks in his body” with his hands, his eyes …. Because to discover, perform, create allows the exploration of different states of mind.
The workshop can be defined as a space where one can find one’s own inner resources, where certain aspects of oneself are allowed to emerge, that would otherwise not manifest themselves or very little in another context.
ORIGINAL FRENCH VERSION:
Cet atelier a accueilli 18 enfants.

What more could one give than to assist someone to connect with that inner self and find a means to express it? Workshop sounds very interesting. Will be looking forward to reading more. Cecelia
