FABIO MIGNOLA’s guitar playing is a cross between Earl Klugh and Peter White.  A musical trip that will take you from Brazil to Italy with a stop over in the Caribbean and just a pinch of Funk.  Mix it all up gently and you’ve got a travelogue of  Jazz covering styles and places!

Born in Locarno, Switzerland, an eclectic cultural environment with a strong Italian heritage, Fabio was fascinated by the various forms of  folk and classical music that surrounded him.  The simplistic beauty of the acoustic guitar quickly became the voice of this passionate musician.

Fabio, welcome, thank you for participating in this project and answering the following questions:

No.1)  What is music to and for you?

I always find it difficult to define such an ethereal art which you cannot measure or touch but I would say that for me it is the language of emotions.

What it is to me?   Just like the air I need to breath.

 No. 2)  What inspires you?

I usually let inspiration come by itself, better not force it.

I can get inspired by nature, feelings, sounds, rhythms, harmonies…

I wrote my last CD in three days…it simply came to me.

No. 3)  When you are creating, playing (not performing) where does it take you?  I mean, where does your mind travel?

Deep into my heart where my emotions are created.

No. 4)  Do you think music, visual art and health are related and if so, how?

I think different arts are deeply related although actually we lost a lot of the collaboration that artist of different disciplines had in the past. Would be nice to still have exchanges between arts, would be creative.Fabio_Mignola_live_4

I’m also really interested in music therapy; I read quite a lot about it and followed workshops, too.

I’m interested in the effects it makes to the human being.

That’s why when I choose or have to judge music I try to look not necessarily for the contents but mainly to what it gives to me in terms of feelings.

no.5)  How do you feel when playing your music, not performing, but just playing for yourself?

Well, there’s a special sensation of intimacy between me and my instrument, just like it would be a part of me, a “speaking part” driven by the deepest in me.

No. 6)  Do you identify with your music and on what level?

Absolutely, it’s the best way for me to express myself and because of that I find it a fundamental part of my life. It also reflects unintentionally my deepest emotions and goals. I identify on many levels and it also helps me find my balance spiritually but also physically.

No. 7)  When do you do your best work (day, night, alone, environment)?

Of course when there’s calm around, but when depends on the mood I’m in.

Fabio_Mignola__IMG_0146Sometimes it has to be close to nature, for instance in a garden.

No. 8)  Does music help you connect with your “higher self” whatever that means for you and if so, elaborate?

Yes, but it’s such a spiritual thing that only music with its energies can express. Guess that my “presence” is just like an instrument used to express or let flow energies.

No 9)  What do you think of creativity in the public school systems and in your opinion, what could be a simple solution to improve it?

As for me, in schools art is not considered as important as other disciplines so that creativity is not the biggest goal.
In general I also think that creativity nowadays has to fight a lot against time pressure in a world that’s speeding up more and more every day.
Maybe the first thing we should teach/learn should be to “take it easy” and work on creativity trying to bring out the best in each one of us.

No. 10)  How do you feel about improvisation in music?

It’s something amazing for a musician to be able to improvise.
I see it as the subconscious “speaking” freely with very few limitations.
I couldn’t live without it!

What a great interview Fabio, it’s been a pleasure.

About

My name is Michele Andree. I am an artist, I paint musicians in action. I think I’m a musician at heart, my instrument being… a brush, so I play…brush and I paint… music.
I love jazz. I call it freedom music. It promotes special values. I love intelligent people and good conversations.

Some people ask me how music relates to art. Personally I find they go hand in hand. Music is what turns me on to painting. It makes me see colours
