Sarah Fahey was born in Moose Factory, Ontario where her parents were teachers on the reserve. Her first exposure to art was Cree beading and paintings. Sarah’s dad carved, drew and wrote in his spare time. When her parents split they both moved south and Sarah grew up between their homes in Huntsville and Bramalea, eventually moving up to Huntsville forSarah Fahey 07_todaythewallsaretiredthe end of highschool. At 18 Sarah began travelling out to BC and after going back and forth a few years finally ending up staying. She went to a year of art school in Nelson, BC playing with metal, clay, writing and design. Sarah then moved to Cawston, BC a small farming community where along with farming she worked with a puppet theatre company, learned how to weave and went down to Arizona for an alternative building workshop at a place called Arcosanti. The dream was to build her own home but says that it is easyier said then done and maybe one day it will happen. In the meantime Sarah had a daughter and moved to Penticton in the Okanagan. She has since focused on painting, growing her skill and style and a body of work and has found a new love: spray paint. Sarah continues to experiment with subject matter, texture and style. She is presently living in Vernon, BC completing a diploma in Publishing & Writing. Sarah loves to learn new things and finds that all of it ends up incorporated into her paintings.

Welcome, Sarah, and thank you for participating in this project by answering the following questions:

No. 1) What is art to and for you?

1) I don’t have a big idea behind art I just do it. I have ideas in my head that need a form to be in. These ideas keep me going, keep me full of life that maybe I can put it into form.

Sarah Fahey 01_allthereisNo.2)  What inspires you?

2) A sound, a word, a group of words, a dance, and a song, someone else’s painting; all these inspire and spark ideas. I am inspired by small details and big ideas. I like things that move, I feel most inspired in movement. I watched a dance performance the other evening and thought I want to paint like that. I wish paint was more moveable and fluid and alive like dance and music, so I make “in process” albums on face book so people can see the movement, all the layers. The final picture is hardly the point and only one small portion of what the audience sees.

No. 3)  When you are painting, creating, where does it take you?  Where does your mind travel?

3) Sometimes painting doesn’t take me anywhere it is just a pain in the ass when you have an idea in your head and you can’t get it out.

No.4)  Do you think visual art, music and health are related and if so, how?

4) I think creative expression is crucial to health, it is life.

No.5)  How do you feel when you are painting?

5) I have to paint. Sometimes I hate it. I hate that I must. Sometimes I wish I didn’t care that I could be happy with the life, but I’m not, so I am compelled to paint. I paint because it is what I’ve worked at the most. I have a picture of me painting when I was five in the arts Sarah Fahey 05_therearecentre in the CN Tower. I have always painted and I always will. In between I forget that this IS what I am supposed to be doing.

No. 6)  Under what conditions do you do your best work?

6) When I am driven, usually frustrated, a gotta get it out feeling. Definitely need good music playing and space to spread out. I generally work on the floor.

No. 7)  Do you identify with your subject and if so, on what level?

 7) I don’t really understand this question. I would assume so.

No. 8)  Does painting help you connect with your higher self, whateve that may be for you?

8) I always return to paint no matter what else I do. I think when I’m painting and it’s flowing really well I am nowhere and everywhere, I am gone somewhere else and when I return I feel relaxed and fulfilled.

Sarah Fahey 02_coveredsurfaces No. 9)  How do you feel about creativity in the public school systems? (not necessarily art classes but in general)

9) I think the school system the way it is designed squashes creativity, creativity require self exploration, experimentation and this is hard to achieve when the main goal is to facilitate a grading system.

No. 10)  In your opinion, what would you see as a simple solution to improve creativity in the public school systems?

10) Get rid of the grading system, teach teachers to be adaptable to different learning styles. Help kids learn how they learn.

Again, Sarah, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and your amazing talent with us.  Until our paths meet again, I wish you well.  Bless you!

Maria, it was great meeting you and shnriag this experience with you as well. What a great weekend with MeRa and Brian. But I think the best part is the bonding we’ve all done after the workshop, the feeling of togetherness, and knowing we all have this community of women who get it and will lift us up when we need lifting, hold our hand when we need holding, and share and support always. It was and continues to be truly amazing. You are an extremely talented photographer and I am blessed to share this journey with you. ?xoxo Marcy

About

My name is Michele Andree. I am an artist, I paint musicians in action. I think I’m a musician at heart, my instrument being… a brush, so I play…brush and I paint… music.
I love jazz. I call it freedom music. It promotes special values. I love intelligent people and good conversations.

Some people ask me how music relates to art. Personally I find they go hand in hand. Music is what turns me on to painting. It makes me see colours
