PIERRE HARRY ERIZIAS TOUCHING BASS!

PIERRE HARRY ERIZIAS, originally from Haiti, this young talented musician now lives in Quebec, Canada. Pierre is not only a wonderful bassist, but he also makes them. Back in the early 90’s, he wanted to acquire a high quality bass but not having the financial means to do so, he did the next best thing: he became an instrument maker and made it himself! For the love of music, he realized his dream!

Pierre, welcome and thank you for participating in this project even through you incredibly hectic schedule. You are such a good role model for others not to give up on their dream. I am honoured to do this article with you. Let’s begin, shall we:

No. 1) What is music to and for you?

Humans have a visceral or vital connection with music, or I should say with all that is wavelength, vibration often without being aware of this. Everything around us and inside of us vibrates in a precise frequency cycle. I see and hear music everywhere. Music to me is the basis of creation. I do my best to honour it.

No. 1) Qu’est-ce que la musique pour toi?

Je crois que l’on a en tant qu’humains une connexion viscérale avec la musique…ou plus particulièrement tout ce qui est ondes, vibration et ce sans qu’on le sache vraiment. Tout autour de nous et à l’intérieur de nous vibre dans un cycle “fréquentiel” assez précis. Je vois et entends de la musique partout. LA musique est à la base même de la création selon moi. J’essaie du mieux que je peux de lui faire honneur.

No. 2) What inspires you?

I quite like the word inspiration because it proposes a concrete action, action X producing reaction Y. I’ve reflected upon this “piston” effect a lot especially during my artistic creative process of BD project, based on a dream I had. It’s amazing how our whole artistic production is influenced by our reality. I could elaborate a lot on the subject but I’ll save that for some other time.

No. 2) Qu’est-ce qui t’inspire?

2)J’aime bien le mot “inspiration” car il propose une action concrète, un mouvement X qui Pierre Erizias 12 produit une réaction Y. Cet effet de “piston” m’a beaucoup fait réfléchir surtout durant mon processus de création artistique de projet de BD basé sur un rêve que j’avais eu. C’est assez surprenant comment notre réalité influence toute notre production artistique. Je pourrais en parler plus mais bon je garde ça pour une autre fois!

No. 3) When you are creating, playing, where does it take you? Where does your mind travel?

Actually, I like to remain in the concrete, the real. I don’t really need anything to appreciate what I have, what I feel, what I am living. I am convinced that by trying to escape reality often makes us miss the first reason to be alive which is to live first and then create. How can we live fully if we are always trying to confuse our mind with false references? What I love is the interaction created through artistic true and honest sharing. Those moments are what keep me in touch with real music, that which is the essence of artistic creativity. I’m becoming much too serious now!

No. 3) Lorsque tu crées, joues, où cela t’amène-t-il? Où voyage ton esprit?

3)J’aime bien rester dans le concret, le vrai. Je n’ai pas vraiment besoin d’échappatoire pour apprécier ce que j’ai, ce que je vis, ce que je ressens. J’ai la ferme conviction que d”essayer d’échapper à la réalité nous fait manquer le but premier de notre vie…qui est de vivre premièrement et de créer par la suite! Comment vivre pleinement si on essaie toujours de s’embrouiller l’esprit en se créant de faux repères? J’aime l’interaction qui est crée dans un moment de partage artistique vrai et intègre. Ce sont les moments comme ceux-ci que me gardent en contact avec la vraie musique, celle qui est l’essence même de la créativité artistique. Bon je deviens trop sérieux!

No. 4) Do you feel music, painting and health are related and if so, how?

I think all is intimately related. We are part of a reality that connects all of us. That’s the beauty of our world!

No. 4) Crois-tu que la musique, la peinture et la santé sont reliées et si oui, comment vois-tu cela?

4) Selon moi, tout est intimement relié. On fait partie d’un réalité qui ma foi nous lie les uns aux autres. Ça c’est la beauté de notre monde!

No. 5) How do you feel when you play for yourself versus playing for an audience?

I love to interact so much with other musicians as well as the public, that I’m not much of a home musician. I’ve done a lot of theatre and music concerts in my life. I find being on stage gives me a lot of energy, like a concentrated shot of life!

No. 5) Lorsque tu joues pour toi-même versus devant un public, comment te sens-tu?

5) Je ne suis pas un bon musicien de salon. J’aime trop interagir avec d’autres musiciens et aussi avec le public. J’ai fait beaucoup de théâtre dans ma vie et beaucoup de concert musicaux aussi. Je retire énormément d’énergie à être sur la scène. C’est comme une dose de vie en concentré!

No. 6) Do you identify with your music and if so, on what level?

Not really, I’m more the type that once created, music must just take off!!!(perhaps too poetic!) Generally, I don’t really get attached to my creations because I feel the source from whence they come is endless.

No. 6) Est-ce que tu t’identifies à ta musique et si oui, à quel niveau?

6- Pas vraiment. Je suis un peu du genre une fois créée, la musique doit prendre son envol!! (trop poétique!) Je ne m’attache pas vraiment à mes créations en générale car je me suis toujours dis que la source d’où elles proviennent est intarissable.

No. 6) Under what conditions do you work best?

Although, and my wife can vouch on that, I’m quite disorganized, strangely I work best in a neat and orderly environment with not too many distractions.

No. 7) Dans quelles conditions fais-tu ton meilleur travail?

7- Je suis une personne assez désordonnée (demandez à ma femme!!). Étrangement, je suis plus inspiré dans un environnement assez sain et rangé sans trop de distraction.

No. 8) Does playing music help you connect with your Higher Self, whatever that is for you?

I’ve never really thought about it because I see no difference or separation within myself on any level. On the other hand, I find music has become a powerful means of communication with the outside world and that I find awesome.

No. 8) Est-ce que jouer de la musique t’aide à communiquer avec ton “Je” supérieur?

8- Je n’ai jamais considéré la chose parce que je ne vois pas de différence ou de séparation dans ma personne, et ce à tous les niveaux. La musique est devenue par contre un moyen de communication puissant avec le monde extérieur et ça je trouve vraiment génial.

No. 9) How do you feel about creativity in the public school system?

As I’m a direct product of that environment, I can safely say that creativity was especially present in our mischief!! I was lucky enough to have very good and very bad teachers who actually stimulated my imagination. Because I was a fast learner, I’d draw on any piece of paper I could find and find refuge in that universe full of life! Did more harm than good but that was the system then! I think there could be a better understanding of the creative process in the educational system. Not all students learn the same way and at the same pace.

No. 9) Que penses-tu de la créativité dans les écoles publiques?

9- Puisque je suis un produit direct du système public, je peux dire qu’elle (la créativité) a été présente surtout dans tous nos mauvais coups!! J’ai eu la chance d’avoir de très bons profs et aussi de très mauvais profs qui ont stimulé mon imagination. À l’époque, je dessinais beaucoup et sur tous les bout de papier que je pouvais trouver. Comme j’apprenais très vite, je me réfugiais souvent dans cet univers plein de vie. Ça m’a beaucoup nui mais bon c’était le système. Il pourrait y avoir une meilleur compréhension de l’usage de matériel créatif dans le système éducationnel je crois. Ce ne sont pas tous les élèves qui retiennent la matière de la même manière et au même rythme.

No. 10) In your opinion, what could be a simple solution to improve creativity in the public school system?

I really like the idea of workshops in the school system. Recently, I’ve had a chance to hold a few workshops with students who are at the drop out level and I was amazed to see that in general, most of the kids thinking of dropping out are misunderstood and categorized by their teachers and pairs, when all they really want is to be allowed to express themselves without judgment.

No. 10) Selon toi, quelle serait une solution simple pour améliorer la créativité dans les écoles publiques?

10- J’aime beaucoup l’idée des ateliers au niveau scolaire. J’ai eu la chance d’en offrir dernièrement surtout au niveau du décrochage scolaire et c’est incroyable de voir qu’en général, les jeunes qui songent au décrochage sont mécompris et catégorisés par les enseignants et leur pairs et ce au détriment de leur désir de s’exprimer sans jugements.

No. 11) What is jazz for you?

I like the image of music being a language. Therefore if music is a language, then jazz is the ongoing conversation made up of all our experiences good or bad, our knowledge, our joy, our sorry, that continues with all the encounters we can have throughout our life. A medley, a compilation of all we are, would like to accomplish without holding back. In my opinion, the whole point is to become more human.

No. 11) Le jazz c’est quoi pour toi?

11- J’aime beaucoup l’image qui perçoit la musique comme un langage. Si la musique est un langage, le jazz selon moi est la conversation continue que l’on peut avoir au cours de rencontres tout au long de notre vie, utilisant tout notre vécu, connaissances acquises bonne et moins plaisantes, joies et peines. C’est un amalgame, une compilation de ce qu’on est, on voudrait bien accomplir et tout ça sans aucune retenu. Le but de l’exercise selon moi: devenir vraiment humain.

No. 12) How do you feel about improvisation?

Looking at it from a more academic point of view, I would say it’s a spontaneous creation, as is a sentence we say to someone we’re talking with. No need to start thinking of verbs, adverbes, subject, adjective, it’s a creation emanating from this whole compilation of theory, synthesis and pleasure of sharing all of that in a personal manner. It’s a lot more than that but I can’t describe it in words.

No. 12) Que penses-tu de l’improvisation?

12- L’improvisation est, dans un sens un peu plus académique des choses, une création spontanée du même type que la phrase que l’on prononce à une personne avec laquelle on échange. Pas besoin de penser verbe, adverbe, sujet, adjectif, c’est une création issue de cette compilation de théorie, système syntaxique, et plaisir de partager tout ça de manière personnelle. C’est plus que ça je crois mais les mots me manquent…!

No. 13) What made you choose bass?

Somehow I’ve always known I wanted to play bass but I had no idea what that instrument was called. It was either that or drums. My two older sisters always took music lessons as far back as I can remember. Each year they had a concert, a sort of public recital. At one of these, and I couldn’t have been more than five, there was a rock group and at one point the bassist played solo. Revelation! Right after the concert, I asked my sisters what the name of that instrument was. One of them answered “Oh, it’s just another way of playing guitar. As I hated guitar at that time, I began a very active campaign to get my parents to buy me a set of drums!

Several years later, while in church, a young man come up with an electric bass on which I had the pleasure of playing my first notes. My dream. That’s how I finally got my first bass at the age of 18.

The role of bass guitar is like a second skin. And like bass in music, I often play a supportive role in people’s lives, I’m rarely a leader up front but I am always there to show the direction musically. I make musical instruments to help musicians create beautiful music as well, therefore I honestly think I’m where I’m supposed to be!

No. 13) Pourquoi as-tu choisi la basse comme instrument?

13- J’ai toujours su que je voulais jouer de la basse mais je ne connaissais pas le nom de l’instrument. C’était sois ça ou la batterie. Mes 2 grandes soeurs ont toujours pris des cours de musique aussi loin que je me souvienne. À chaque année, elles avaient un concert, un genre de récital devant public . À l’un de ceux là, je devais avoir 5 ans, il y avait un groupe de rock je crois et le bassiste a pris un solo. Révélation!! Tout de suite après le concert, j’ai demandé à mes soeurs le nom de cet instrument. L’une d’elle m’a répondu: “C’est juste une autre manière de jouer de la guitare”!! Je détestais la guitare alors je me suis lancer dans la demande active d’un set de batterie à mes parents!!

Plusieurs années plus tard, étant issue de l’église protestant, un jeune s’est présenté avec la première basse électrique sur laquelle j’Ai eu la chance de jouer mes premières notes. Le rêve. C’est comme ça qu’à 18 ans, j’ai finalement pu avoir ma première basse.

Le rôle de la basse me colle à la peau. Tout comme la basse, j’ai souvent un rôle de support dans la vie des gens, je ne suis rarement un leader d’avant-scène mais je suis présent pour pointer la direction à prendre musicalement. je suis aussi luthier donc je fabrique des instruments pour aider les instrumentistes à créer de la fabuleuse musique. Je crois que suis à ma place!
