SYLVIE SOULARD’S FINE ENCAUSTIC ART!
Born in Mauricie, SYLVIE SOULARD, has no formal art training other than what she learned in high school. As a young girl, one day a teacher had her grate coloured wax on paper and then melt it with a hot iron. She’s gone from there to developing her own technique in encaustic painting, working with different waxes, airguns, making her own colours, using wood as a support for her paintings, to having workshops for beginners, to becoming a supplier of irons. Sylvie enjoys meeting creative people who are willing to learn and explore colours and techniques. Sylvie, welcome, and thank you so much for participating in this project.

Let’s begin with these questions:
No. 1) What is art for you personally?
Creation in whatever form is a means of expression, an opening inside of us that leads to others, to exchanges, sharing…
No. 2) What inspires you?
Music because of the emotions that swell up inside, words in certain songs also. Sometimes it is as if I breathe in the music, I’m so absorbed in it. And sometimes the words just carry me elsewhere. Other times a simple title, a phrase from a poem will also inspire me. However I find that everything is inspiring, the beautiful colours of the sky, a piece of material, the branches of a tree in winter.
No. 3) When you are painting, creating, where does it take you, where does your mind travel
Working with, rather I should say playing with wax leads me to the pleasure of discovery. Creating textures of melted wax or making it the smoothest possible is pure pleasure. I look forward to having a totally equipped workshop that will allow me to explore, experiment and satisfy my curiosity as much as I want.
No 4) Do you think visual arts, music and health are related and if so, at what level? Or how do you see that?
I really believe that creating is therapeutic. Time ceases to exist, it allows one to escape from the stress of daily life. Whether you are a child or an adult, it is also very rewarding. Sharing passions on a human level is truly enriching.
No. 5) When you’re painting, creating, how do you feel?
Regardless of my state of mind, I have to feel like it otherwise it leads to nowhere.
No. 6) Do you identify with your subjects and if so, at what level?
Not all, some more than others. But I believe that everything we create is a facet of ourselves. Whether our own personality, the influence of a moment, a period of our life.
Certain colours are related to certain emotions for me, so a lot of my work is a story. I feel that the abstract form is like what instrumental is to music. Everyone experiences it in their own unique way without the constraint of words or images although these are sometimes source of inspiration.
No. 7) In what context do you do your best work?
I prefer to work alone or in small groups. Because of my job, I paint mostly on weekends. I prefer working at night, I find it more inspiring, and easier to sort of just cut myself off from the outside world. So much so in fact, that I don’t see the hours go by and I can paint late into the night! I love the smell of the iron heating, the contrast between the heat of the iron and the softness of cooled wax. There’s something mysterious and sensual in being in contact with it.
No.8) Does your art help you in you “connect”
to your Higher Self?
I know very little about the “higher self”. It seems that this would be the source of inspiration. So, the fact of closing ones eyes, immersing oneself in music, allowing emotions and images to arise and then choosing colours… maybe that’s what one could call connecting.

No. 1) Qu’est-ce que l’art pour vous personnellement?
L’art, la création quelle qu’elle soit est un moyen d’expression, une ouverture en nous vers les autres qui amènent à la rencontre, l’échange et le partage.
No. 2) Qu’est-ce qui vous inspire?
Par les émotions qu’elles font ressurgir, la musique, certaines paroles de chansons, Quelques fois c’est comme si je respirais la musique tellement je m’en imprègne et que certains mots m’amènent ailleurs. Quelques fois un simple titre, une phrase d’un poème, m’inspirent tout particulièrement. Mais tout est inspirant, la beauté des couleurs du ciel, un bout de tissu, les ramures d’un arbre en hiver.
No. 3) Lorsque vous êtes en train de peindre, de créer, où est-ce que cela vous amène, c’est-à-dire où voyage votre esprit?
Travailler, je dirais plutôt jouer avec l’encaustique m’amène vers le plaisir de la découverte. Créer des textures de cire fondue ou la rendre le plus lisse possible est un pur plaisir. J’ai hâte d’avoir un atelier complètement installé pour pouvoir satisfaire ma curiosité et explorer autant que je le voudrais. Je commence toujours avec une idée de base tout en restant ouverte aux surprises.
No 4) Croyez-vous que les arts visuels, la musique et la santé (santé à tous les niveaux) sont reliés et si oui, à quel niveau? Ou comment voyez-vous ca?
Je crois vraiment que la création est thérapeutique. Le temps n’existe plus, c’est une évasion permettant ainsi de se libérer du stress quotidien. Qu’on soit enfant ou adulte c’est souvent valorisant. Partager des passions est très enrichissant sur le plan humain.
No. 5) Lorsque vous êtes en train de peindre, de créer etc. comment vous sentez-vous? Votre état d’âme?
Quelque soit mon état d’âme que ça me tente, sinon ça ne mène à rien.
No. 6) Est-ce que vous vous identifiez à vos sujets et si oui, à quel niveau? En quoi vous ressemblent-ils?
Pas tous, certains plus que d’autres. Mais je crois que tout ce qu’on crée est une facette de nous. Que ce soit notre personnalité propre, l’influence d’un instant, une tranche de notre vie. Souvent pour moi les couleurs sont associées à certaines émotions, donc plusieurs tableaux sont pour moi une histoire. Je crois que l’abstrait est à la peinture ce qu’est l’instrumental à la musique. Chacun le vit à sa façon sans les contraintes des mots ou des images qui en sont pourtant l’inspiration.
No. 7) Dans quel contexte faites-vous votre meilleur travail?
Je préfère travailler seule ou en petit groupe. Étant sur le marché du travail, je peins surtout la fin de semaine. Le soir est pour moi plus inspirant, ça facilite la coupure avec le monde extérieur. À tel point que je ne vois pas passer les heures. Je peux peindre pendant des heures, jusqu’au milieu de la nuit.
J’aime l’odeur du fer qui chauffe, le contraste entre la chaleur du fer et la douceur de la cire refroidie. Le contact de la cire a quelque chose de mystérieux et de sensuel.
No. 8) Est-ce que l’art vous aide à communiquer avec votre “Je” supérieur? 
Je sais très peu de choses sur le “moi supérieur”. Paraît-il que ce serait la source de l’inspiration. Donc, le fait de fermer les yeux, me laisser envahir par la musique, sentir monter l’émotion et les images pour ensuite choisir mes couleurs… c’est peut-être ça se connecter.
