YIM CHOON LEE  lives a city by the name of Geoje, about a five hour drive from Seoul, South Korea.  He comes from a family of artists for the past three generations.  His family does the traditional art of paper and bamboo which is a form of art over 200 years old.  Now 45 years old, Yim has been painting since the age of five.

“My dream is to become a world-class artist.  It should be possible, but I want to be a world-class artists.  For I am a weak and frail man but the commitment is strong.” Says Yim.   Yim does not listen to music while working.  He is married and has two daughters.

Yim, welcome and thank you for participating in the project.  I know it has not been easy because of  language difficulties and I hope I have not distorted your words while trying to correct.   Your form of art, what you call tearing art, is so unique and amazing, I’m certain people are going to be quite impressed by it.  Shall we get on with the questions

No. 1)  What is art to and for you (generally and personally)?Yim5

I do not know. I will work hard for my art work.  You know, I’m a modern artist, sculptor, installation artist, painter.  And I work as a  policeman as well.

No. 2)  What inspires you?

My art work is my passion.  Sometimes it is so strong, I cannot sleep.  I am also a police officer, while working I feel like painting and always come up with many ideas that I transfer on canvas.

No. 3)  When you are creating, where does it take you?  Where does your mind travel?

I always work from my imagination, and very often it just rises to the surface.  A work of art will often provoke the next one and my mind is already there while I work on the present one  or while I’m cleaning up afterwards.  What I have shown so far is just the beginning.

No 4)  Do you think visual art, music and health are related and if so, how?

Yim 1All art is  relevant to each other.  My art is the aesthetics of the line. I draw the line as when one recalls  musical lightness.

No 5)  When you are painting, or doing your art, how do you feel?

I can not feel anything. Just feel like my hands are a canvas.  When I’m working, I do not eat anything, I am not hungry.

No. 6)  Under what conditions do you work best?

My work is fixed.  My other job is a police officer.  I do my artwork in my spare time so in other words,  it is a war against time.  My work is more time consuming.

And works of art that I have not timed. Just hours if there are works of art. I still have not produced my best work. Today, I have to work my best art work in the studio.

No. 7)  Do you identify with your subject and if so, on what level?Yim 3Do not know, I do my art, and  it is very hard.

No. 8)  Does your art help you connect with your “Higher Self” whatever that is for you?

My art is widely known, I’d like to think that is all.

No. 9)  How do you feel about creativity in the public school systems?

Not good.  It is not creative, mostly just trying to teach technique.

No. 10) In your opinion, what would be a simple solution to improve creativity in the public school systems?

Many would say that students read books. Especially philosophy, etc. And that will draw students to feel. And I should add, to have discussions on the subjects as well afterwards.

No. 11)  Tell us a bit about your art?

Yim 6Looking closely at my work is a philosophy. Most my art contains the strong spirit of humanism. And I do not like the work of painters trying to camouflage colors. It is a picture of a dead thing in a word.  Pictures of the artists ideas and philosophy should be behind them.  And the paintings should be evidence of a lot of effort.  Craftsmanship is absolutely necessary.

Yim, I want to thank you again for sharing your thoughts and feelings with us and above all your amazing art.  Until we work togeter again, keep well and be blessed!

About

My name is Michele Andree. I am an artist, I paint musicians in action. I think I’m a musician at heart, my instrument being… a brush, so I play…brush and I paint… music.
I love jazz. I call it freedom music. It promotes special values. I love intelligent people and good conversations.

Some people ask me how music relates to art. Personally I find they go hand in hand. Music is what turns me on to painting. It makes me see colours
