SEBASTIEN TREMBLAY’S MUSICALITY!

SÉBASTIEN TREMBLAY lives in a small village in the Laurentians.  He’s rather quiet, reserved, loves animals…  But this young man has incredible talent.  Now I may not play an instrument but I know sound, and his sound is magic.  And when he plays, his sound transports you to another realm.  He’s also part of those musicians I mentioned a few times that inspired me  to paint again.  When I hear his music, I feel I am privileged and blessed.  It’s only ten minutes but well worth listening to on the video!

Sébastien, thank you for sharing your thoughts and your music with us.  Let us begin, shall we:

Question #1 (A :  What is music to and for you?

It’s something that definitely liberates me and keeps me young!

It kills boringness (boredom) and it’s a healer of bad moments or experiences!

Whenever I listen to something that is good to my ears or whenever I play it for myself, practice it, or perform it live, I never have the slightest feeling of wasting my time and my time is precious.

Question #1 (B :

It’s a lot of dedication.  If you want to be able to perform good music as a musician, it takes a long time, like anything else you want to be good at, I guess.

But for me, it is and it has to be as well, an unconditional dedication for whoever, practicing it or producing it alone or with friends.

It’s, I must say, a very interesting social communicative tool too.

Firstly:  The awesome worldwide language and writing of music notes between musicians of different nationalities. It’s so sick and fun to be able to create, communicate and jam musical art through different musical instrument tools, with and without sound effects or processors.       SEBASTIEN IMG_0129

Secondly:  I’m not an activist of any kind and I don’t really want to be one in general.

I’m not crazy about religious, pedagogic and/or political lyrical songs, but sometimes there are artists that do use and exploit this communication tool pretty well, so therefore when it’s not « propagandist » ! Yunowamsayin ?!

Question #2:  What inspires you?

I guess today, anything that is modern and well produced will inspire me, whatever music style it is, especially when the recordings are mints and when there’s a lot of subtleties in the arrangements of either lyrical or instrumental songs . I really like anything that sounds somewhat new.

Question #3: When you are in the process of playing or creating, where does it take you?  I mean where does your mind travel?

To be honest with y’all, I don’t think I can even remember 1% of the dreams I supposedly make every other night of sleep!! For me there’s no such thing as where does music takes me or where does my mind travel while the artistic creation is performed ! It’s like my sleep!! lol..!

But if I can answer anything that could make a little sense for that double question, when I play music, especially in an improvisation process, I like to establish as soon as possible what key it’s in and what are the chords! And once I’ve established it, I just let myself go with the good notes, my experience and knowledge of music!!  To eventually wake up at the end of the jam pretty relaxed and most of the time happy and contented. I guess I could say that it’s a meditation. My meditation!!

Question #4:  Do you feel music, visual art and health are related?

Perhaps. But knowledge is power.  Health and power to heal is personal.

If I listen to music that makes me groove, smile, move and dance, if the visuals didn’t make me feel traumatised, stressed or depressed, I don’t see why, if I use it individually or mix the two together in a positive way, that it should make me or anyone unhealthy at all!

If someone is unfortunately sick, injured, mentally ill or if he or she has to go through tough times, I guess that musical and visual arts can be used as very good natural remedies while the healing process is in place!! Why not!!

Question #5 : How do you feel when you are playing for yourself?

I feel lucky and blessed to have this chance which I’ve practiced hard for, this chance of being able to express and anticipate musical notes through various instruments, but mainly my guitar.

I feel there’s always something constructive and positive for myself SEBASTIEN IMG_0130every time I express and invest time playing music!

I feel it’s good, “GOODEFIED” for me and also to improve my instrument music skills.

Question #6:  Do you identify with your music and if so, on what level?

I guess I am, because my musical style is quite diversified.

I have loads of friends and interest in many different cultures as well, therefore identifying myself with my open “mindness”.

I could identify myself as well with the musical influence and variety of the international jazz festival as a Montrealer and supporter.

Question #7 :  When do you do your best work?

Ironically, when it’s been a couple of days that I haven’t touched my instrument, there is sort of a craving for it.   I do not feel  bored  playing or practicing the same thing that I’ve been doin’ for a while.  Spontaneous jams, not organized or planned are good ones!  But for sure the best are when surrounded with knowledgeable, talented musicians who communicate well this great and beautiful language of music.

I definitely do my best work when my time is invested on original stuff!

I’m not too crazy about working on cover songs, but there’s some exceptions I must say!

Question #8:  Does music help you connect with your higher self?

No, but it feels good, “GOODIFICATION”, it’s “GOODIFYING” for my “higher self” I’m sure !!!

Peace !!! SEBASTIEN IMG_0128

Seb, I truly appreciate this and I urge you to continue your wonderful music and allow it to become known to all.  Thank you so much, until the next time, my friend, be blessed!

About

My name is Michele Andree. I am an artist, I paint musicians in action. I think I’m a musician at heart, my instrument being… a brush, so I play…brush and I paint… music.
I love jazz. I call it freedom music. It promotes special values. I love intelligent people and good conversations.

Some people ask me how music relates to art. Personally I find they go hand in hand. Music is what turns me on to painting. It makes me see colours
