MIKE SAVAGE ACCENTUATING THE OBVIOUS!
Growing up in a place called Strawberry Hill has to have a positive influence on a person. And Mike Savage grew up there and has spent the past two decades at his easel capturing life’s moments with spontaneous and bold brushstrokes! He enjoys simple things like music, cooking, reading, friends and family. And art is simple too, Mike believes it’s to be enjoyed by all and that finally, you either like it or you don’t, simple as that!!!

No. 1) What is art to and for you? (generally and personally)
1. Generally it is my livelihood. Though it is not work. Personally, it is my life, an extent ion of my being.
No. 2) What inspires you?
2. The whole world around me. It’s all fair game for my vision.
No. 3) When you are creating, painting, where does it take you? Where does your mind travel?
3. To wherever or whatever I’m painting. I feel the image, be it the sky, a building, a cup…whatever, I’m part of it.
No. 4) Do you think painting, music and health are related and if so, how?
4. Well, I never paint without music. To me they’re one and the same. I’m very particular as to what I listen to with each new painting. Health. It seems to make me feel good even though I’m generally exhausted at the end of the day. But a contented exhaustion.
No. 5) How do you feel when you are painting?
5. Absorbed in it. Almost an out of body thing! Buzzed.
No. 6) Do you identify with your subject and if so, on what level?
6. Only in the sense that I like the object an it’s composition. A good arrangement of the visuals for a piece is most important. When all fits together, I’m thrilled!
No. 7) Under what conditions do you work best?
7. Under pressure or when totally relaxed. Morning. When it’s sunny, and if I’m in the groove, which I usually am. It’s second nature.
No. 8) Does painting help you connect with your “higher self” whatever that is for you?
8. Yeah, but I try not to get too heavy, just let the creative force flow. No angst here. Just love color and being expressive. I have a gift, no bragging here, and I love that I can use it.
No. 9) How do you feel about the use of creativity in the public school system,
be it in the development in students or in its use in problem solving?
9. Don’t really know. Watching my kids I like how they do things with art, but then there are those who have a gift and I believe they need to be separated or at least recognized as such, in a simple positive way. Talent seems to be over-rated at higher levels. Anything goes and is considered art. Not enough criticism for those that are there for art’s sake only. Sorry, veering off the question, but I think fundamentals need to be stressed more. Art is great as a tool, but then for some it’s more than playing.
No. 10) In your opinion, what could be a simple solution to improve the use of creativity in the public school system?
10. Focus on a few versus many things. Start with fundamentals and the rest of creativity will blossom. Ignore the philosophy of art at an early age. Let it flow naturally.
No. 11) What if anything, are you hoping to teach or bring to the public through your art?
11. Art is simple. Either you like it or don’t. Get to know the artist and what he/she is like and don’t worry about whether you like it or not, but that you understand what they are doing. But if you like…..buy it and enjoy!
