JUAN CRUZ MARTINEZ’S CONTEMPLATION!
JUAN CRUZ MARTINEZ lives in La Plata, a neighbouring city to Buenos Aires, Argentina. As a child, Juan studied piano but fell in love with the drums in his late teens. His first big influences were/are Jeff Porcaro, Manu Katche and Will Kennedy. His dreams are to continue growing as a player and musician and as a person too. ”Travelling around the globe making music… touch a stone in Greece and Egypt wouldn’t be bad at all !!! I’ve learnt to respect and devote myself to music from great Argentinian teachers like Fernando Martinez and Carlos Riganti.”
Juan, welcome and thank you so much for taking the time to participate in this project and answering the following questions:
No. 1) What is music to and for you?
Maybe it will sound as an easy answer (and it’s not), but I feel that music is truly a different language, to express a lot of things (not everything, but certainly a lot of them). And some of these things are special and mysterious things…
Don’t remember right now who said that “music says what can’t be said with language”. It’s not always that way, but in most cases it is.
And as all language, its value depends on each person’s intention, meaning or goal. There are
some persons who feel that music as a tool to feel better, others use it to calm their own ego…others that give music a meaning to change minds and politic feelings all over the world…others just can’t life without music…other that simply play and don’t think much over it, etcetera…
In my case and since I was a child, music was a bridge to travel along with my imagination. I remember I was 6 or 7 and my mother put some Rick Wakemans Journey To the Centre of The Earth, or Tangerine Dream or Vangelis…and I took a pen and started to draw the music….it was the best thing in the world to me…
The magic does not always happen, but suffice it to appear once in a while to be worth the effort.
No. 1) Que es la musica para vos?
Parecera trillado pero creo que la música es verdaderamente un lenguaje aparte, con el que se pueden expresar muchas cosas, no todas pero ciertamente muchas. Y algunas de estas cosas son especiales y muy misteriosas. No recuerdo ahora quien decía que “la música expresa aquello que no puede expresarse con el lenguaje”. No siempre es asi, pero es cierto en muchos casos.
Y como todo lenguaje, depende de cada persona el uso que cada uno le da, mediante su decisión o sus posibilidades. Hay quienes la sienten como una herramienta para sentirse mejor que otros, hay quienes la usan para dejar tranquilo a su ego, hay quienes le dan un sentido global comunitario y quieren cambiar conciencias con ella, hay quienes simplemente no pueden dejar de pensar su vida en torno a la música, hay quienes simplemente tocan sin pensar demasiado…y muchos etcéteras más.
En mi caso particular, y desde chico, fue un puente para viajar junto a mi imaginación. Me acuerdo tener 6 o 7 años y mi mama ponía algún disco de Rick Wakeman, Tangerine Dream o Vangelis y me tiraba al piso a dibujar la música…era lo mejor que me podía pasar.
La magia no siempre sucede, pero basta que aparezca una vez cada tanto para que valga el esfuerzo invertido.
No. 2) What inspires you?
Listening to real good music inspires me to play, to reach that same (sometimes impossible) level of expression I hear with certain musicians. Don’t know really if good art inspires more good art, but it inspires good intentions for sure.
Some old Frank Zappa cd, Peter Gabriel, Sting, The Meters…or newest Kurt Elling, Yellowjackets, Jamie Cullum…or from my side of the world: Willy Gonzales, Raul Carnota, Jorge Drexler…I have a lot of different styles I like that inspires me.
No. 2) Qué te inspira?
En general me inspira escuchar buena música, me da ganas de tocar y llegar a expresar mis cosas de esa manera tan especial que uno le escucha a ciertos músicos. No sé si el buen arte siempre inspira más buen arte, pero seguro que inspira buenas intenciones.
Algun viejo disco de Zappa, Sting, Peter Gabriel, los Meters o los mas nuevos Kurt Elling, Yellowjackets, Jamie Cullum… o de aca: Willy Gonzales, Carnota, Drexler…. tengo gustos muy variados, como habran visto.
No. 3) When you are playing, creating, where does it take you? Where does your mind travel? (Spirit if you prefer)
In my case I feel my mind traveling when I’m improvising. When I play with other musicians this appears in a more global manner, and I take it with to much concentration to really leave my mind totally free to travel .
When I play a free solo it’s different, because there I can set up an idea and choose what I want to say (although this does not always work out exactly as planned).
I don’t know exactly where my mind goes when improvising. I literally loose the notion of where I am, or the presence of other people listening to me…and it only comes back with the same feeling of awakening from a dream.
No. 3) Cuando estas tocando o creando, qué cosa te moviliza? A donde viaja tu mente o espiritu?
En mi caso siento que mi mente o espíritu solo viaja cuando improviso. Cuando todo con
otros músicos, si bien la improvisación se de de manera grupal, lo tomo con demasiada concentración como para abandonar la mente a un viaje.
Cuando hago un solo libre es distinto, porque ahí si uno puede plantear el punto de partida y lo que quiero decir (aunque a veces no salga como uno lo ha planeado). Personalmente, no se bien a donde viaja mi mente, porque prácticamente pierdo la nocion del mundo y los demás y solo la recupero con la sensación del que se despierta a media noche luego de un sueño.
No. 4) Do you think music, visual arts and health are related and if so, how do you see that?
I think there is a direct relation between anything and almost everything else. Because sometimes this relation isn’t in the “thing” but in “who” analyze this thing. Some people can relate music and visual arts, or this with health. Some musicians view colors when are playing; painters listen music in their minds when painting, etc.
In any case, health for sure has something to do with music, it is not so much music that relates to health as much as emotional states of mind… and music has a lot not because its is with music that is related but with states of mind…and music has a lot of this.
By the way, my mother is music therapist, and because of her I know a lot about how music can really help a person, even heal someone.
No. 4) Crees que la música, las artes visuales y la salud están realcionadas?
Creo que puede haber relación directa entre una cosa y casi cualquier otra. La relación no esta tanto en la cosa sino en quien trata la cosa. Alguna gente puede ver relacionadas la música con las artes visuales, o estas con la salud. Algunos músicos dicen que ven colores cuando tocan, otros que escuchan música cuando pintan. En cualquier caso, la salud seguramente esta vinculada, pues no es con la música que se relaciona, sino mas bien con los estados emocionales, y la música tiene mucho de esto.
Para agregar, comento que mi madre es musicoterapeuta, y realmente se de primera mano que realmente la música puede lograr cosas muy positivas en la salud de la gente.
No. 5) When you are playing for yourself, not performing, how do you feel?
The magic of music does not always appear, as in life. There are things that happen when I’m performing live with other musicians that do not happen when I’m alone playing in my studio, and vice versa. Sometimes I feel in the zone and that makes me happy with myself…some other times it is hard to reach that level and all is more forced. The difference is that when I’m alone I can impose or choose a theme, and when I’m playing with other I have to collaborate in a more communitarian context, have in mind other things…
Generally, I feel great in both worlds!!!
No. 5) Cuando estas tocando vos solo, ¿cómo te sentis?
La magia no siempre sucede, como todo en la vida. Pero cuando toco solo siento cosas parecidas a cuando toco con músicos, porque soy el mas autocritico de mi propia interpretación, y eso lo hago ya sea cuando estoy en casa tocando solo o en un show o una presentación en vivo.
A veces me siento sin la “conexión”, o “frio” o “nervioso”… Pero la mayoría de las veces por suerte puedo dejarme llevar por la música y realmente conectarme con los demás. Y algunas pocas veces, cuando la conexión es áxima o mi estado mental es el indicado…simplemente dejo de estar, no se bien a donde uno está cuando está ahí, pero me doy cuenta cuando termino de tocar…pues ahí siento efectivamente que vuelvo de algún lugar, aunque no sepa bien cual.
Pero en general, me divierto, me siento muy bien!!!
No. 7) Do you identify with your music and if so, on what level?
Right now my career as a musician often takes me to play in various “other musicians’” projects. Although this can be very attractive, demanding and exciting projects sometimes it is difficult to feel fully identified with them. Last year I was asked to join a great big band, here in Argentina, named Banda Hermetica: a great band with great musicians all joined to honour and re-arrange songs from the great Brazilian composer, Hermeto Pascoal.
I had never listened to Hermeto before, and had to learn in 3 weeks tons of arrangements and songs and practically a new style of music (at least to me). It was great, hard and great. But sometimes you have no time to really identify with it, because you have no time to really feel, know and absorb the music.
With the “Jorge Oss quartet” or “In-Versiones”, on the other hand, it is simple because in both projects the musicians know each other on and off stage, we are close friends, and that gives a lot of understanding and connection when we are playing or rehearsing.
And finally, when I compose my own songs this identification is direct, because the music is mine.
No. 7) ¿Te sentis identificado con la musica que tocas y en qué sentido?
En la actualidad mi carrera como músico me lleva a estar tocando en muchos proyectos ajenos por lo que aunque me gusten y me pueda expresar en ellos es difícil lograr sentirse totalmente identificado. Con el cuarteto de jorge oss y el de “in-versiones” es mas sencillo, porque en ambos proyectos los músicos nos conocemos también afuera del escenario, y eso suma mucho entendimiento a la hora de tocar y sentirnos identificados con lo que el otro toca.
Cuando compongo temas propios la relación suele ser muy distinta, y ahí es mas sencillo sentirse identificado con la música, simplemente porque es mia.
No. 8) Does playing help you connect with your higher self, whatever that is for you?
Sometimes your reach this connection by playing, sometimes listening, reading, thinking or taking a short walk or a long trip. I don’t think is has to be a connection with the music, but with your own state of mind and the way you see the world and things. With a proper state of mind, a lot of things in life (most of them trivial or simple) can connect you with your higher self.
No. 8) Tocar te ayuda a estar mas conectado con tu ser interior?
A veces esa conexión se logra tocando, a veces escuchando, a veces leyendo, a veces paseando o pensando. No creo que tenga que ver tanto con la música sino con el estado mental en el que uno se encuentra y la forma en que vemos el mundo. En el estado mental adecuado muchas cosas de la vida cotidiana, simples y sencillas, pueden comunicarnos con nuestro ser interior.
No. 9) Some people feel school systems kill creativity. How do you feel about that?
It depends. Here in Argentina there are a wide variety of examples on both sides. In my own case, music classes at school were depressing: almost teaching us to hate music.
On the other side I have young students at home that tell me wonders about their music class, where teachers show them to listen, understand, play and love music.
I’d like to see my country take some great ideas from other countries, like give young students the opportunity to choose an instrument and study it at school. With A generation like that, our country would have three to four times more better musicians than today.
No. 9) Alguna gente dice que el sistema educativo mata la creatividad. Estas
de acuerdo con esto?
Depende. Aquí en Argentina hay muchos y variados ejemplos. En mi caso particular puedo decir que en la escuela la clase de música era pésima y nos enseñaban a odiarla prácticamente. Yo tuve suerte porque ya traia el amor por la música desde antes, pero creo que muchos de mis compañeros aprendieron a odiarla.
Por otro lado, tengo alumnos jóvenes que me cuentan maravillas de sus clases de música en la escuela, en donde les enseñan a escuchar, a entender y a tocar. Me gustaría que en mi país sea obligatorio elegir un instrumento y estudiarlo durante la primaria y la secundaria… con una generación empleando ese sistema, el alto vuelo que tienen nuestras promesas actuales se duplicaría o triplicaría en potencial.
No. 10) If you agree with no. 9, what do you think could be a very simple solution?
The key is the teachers and the system the education ministry impose to all public schools. There are no easy solutions on this thing, but there has to be a radical change, from the roots, about the importance that the goverment gives to the artistic education of all citizens.
No. 10) Si estas de acuerdo con el punto 9, cual crees que seria la solucion?
La clave esta en los profesores y en el sistema educativo que el ministerio de educación les pida. No hay soluciones sencillas en este tema, pero tendría que ser un cambio desde los cimientos sobre que importancia le da el estado a la educación artística y creativa de sus futuras promesas.
No. 11) What would be a good way to teach people how to really listen so that music could become much more than something to entertain them, but rather a tool for growth?
Simply teach them to listen. Teach young and grown people to be easy, to stay calm, and then to enjoy the act of listening music. Teach people to find a moment, not by obligation but by choice. Nobody will learn to listen to music if they’re worried about other things, about work or other things. Because the first thing to really listen and learn from music is…silence and a contemplative state of mind. You have to stay in silence to let the music say what it has to say to you. And believe me, it always says something.
No. 11) Cual seria la manera correcta de enseñarle a la gente no solo a escuchar musica como entretenimiento, sino a aprender a usarla como herramienta de crecimiento personal?
Simplemente que escuchen estando tranquilos. Que encuentren un momento y no lo hagan por obligación sino por elección. Nadie va a aprender a escuchar música estando preocupado por otras cosas o pensando en un examen para la facultad, o porque te obligan en el conservatorio. Una de las cosas que tenemos para aprender de la musica es el silencio, y lograr un estado contemplativo con ella.
Hay que estar en silencio para dejar que la musica te diga lo que ella tiene para decirte. La musica siempre esta diciendo cosas!
