JAMMIN’ TILL THE BREAK OF DAWN!

Friday, not too cold considering it’s November and we’re up North.  17:20 phone rings… oh, could it be, please, please, please……………YES!  Jam on tonight, yeeeeaaaahhhh!

Ever notice how fast you can turn around and be ready within minutes no matter what you were doing…zip, zip, zap, you’re already outside tapping your foot, looking at your watch wondering, okay, where is he?  Where’s my lift?

Ah, great, he’s here, you leave for your friends’ place.  Alain’s a drummer, a real good drummer.  We’re going to Sebastien’s place.  He’s a guitarist, a real good guitarist.  His friend Richard is there.  Richard is a bass man, a real good bass man.  And there’s me.  I’m the audience, a real good audience, the ears, the artist.  They play, I paint… in my mind.

And so the evening starts with Alain setting up his drums.  He’s got a lot of equipment, takes well over an hour.  Meanwhile Sebastien and Richard set up mikes and wires, and plugs and all of this goes into a sound console (I think) and a computer.  And while the two of them are busy doing this, Alain who’s almost finished setting up, picks up his brushes, you’ll have to pardon me if  I don’t use the proper terms,  I don’t know them and starts a low subtle scratching sound…Alain

Sebastien is still putting up mikes but he’s listening, he is listening, I can almost see his ears vibrating!  Suddenly he picks up his guitar and starts playing,  just a few notes here and there.  Alain builds up the beat.

Richard of course hears all this, but he’s not finished setting up, last minute details and then he picks up his bass and starts looking to get in… two, three notes… Sebastien… Alain… takes them maybe half an hour, not long this time and they’re into their vibe, and they deliver the best jazz you’ve ever heard and this goes on and on and on for three hours non stop.  Higher and higher, better and better, I wish it would never stop… and then it naturally tapers down, slowly, gently, whispering,  back to silence…

And we just sit there with our mouth open… trying to re-enter the third dimension, trying to land.

And then we replay what just happened and we listen to the whole thing, the whole three hours and it’s absolutely extraordinary.  Are these guy geniuses?  You’re darn right they are!

I come home filled with creative energy and sounds and movement and colours and rhythm.  Is music good for your health?  You bet it is, for your body, your mind and your soul, you can bet on it!

About

My name is Michele Andree. I am an artist, I paint musicians in action. I think I’m a musician at heart, my instrument being… a brush, so I play…brush and I paint… music.
I love jazz. I call it freedom music. It promotes special values. I love intelligent people and good conversations.

Some people ask me how music relates to art. Personally I find they go hand in hand. Music is what turns me on to painting. It makes me see colours
