Leonel Jules.2007

LÉONEL JULES, a wonderful artist originally from Haïti, living in Montreal.  Léonel has also been active for many years as a teacher.  His art has won him many great prizes.  His work is international.  He feels honoured as well that one of his painting was accepted by  President Obama of the United States.  He is also very much involved with his community and with the youth.  Recently, he’s been very active in doing his share for Haïti, his home land where he still has family.

Léonel, welcome and thank you sincerely for accepting to participate in this project even though you’ve gone through so much stress and anxiety about your family back in Haïti.  I truly appreciate your generosity.  Shall we begin:

version française après version anglaise.

No. 1) What is art and painting for you?

Art for me, as seen through my modest knowledge of history of art, will remain a human endeavour to ensure the survival of the essence of humanity. In this regard, painting is a way of being in constant touch with my inner being that I believe to be full of spiritual qualities that bind me to the great human family.

No. 2) What inspires you?

The great painters and sculptors: the particular forms seen in children’s drawings, in certain primitive cultures, and mandalas, pillars of meditation that I associate with dreams when referring to timelessness.

No. 3) When you are painting, creating, where does that bring you, that is to say where does your mind travel?

I work hard at discovering the characteristics of the materials I use, the aspects it adopts when applied, the resulting configurations that I’ve come to worship in time, as I evolve through my painting. I often believe my personal preoccupations have nothing to do with my painting and for this I am grateful. I try to cultivate spontaneity and to somehow trap the unpredictable, a game where I am the only one, with the assistance of hazard, to determine and manage the rules…le_son_base_9

No. 4) Do you think the visual arts, music and health are related and if so, how?

The recent introduction of art therapy in certain institutions incites me to say yes in regards to health. But also, to me it seems unavoidable to relate the blossoming of the inner state of the individual and social being to the emergence of artistic expressions. Music is, without doubt, the art form that connects most beings in space and time. The quality of rhythm has the power to transcend disciplines and gives access to memory, to identity in its simplest and most secular form going back in time and evolution.

No. 5) When you paint, you create, how do you feel?

It all depends on what music I listen to, otherwise I work in silence. As I mentioned earlier, I try not to think and act systematically, even if doing so contains the elements of  the ideal  “image” of the painted form… whether this idea is mine or imposed as the sign of a serene language.

No. 6) Do you identify yourself to your subjects and if so, at what level?

The subject being the journey in itself, adding concerns about shape and color … I try to deal with these elements as part of a personal vocabulary. My biggest challenge is to identify myself to a pictorial proposition which is new.   Beyond my style of painting, I am always coming up with new scenarios, although I basically use  the same colours, forms and strokes mainly for its symbolic features such as ideograms.

No. 7) In what context do you do your best work?

imprevisible_9Alone, mainly in the morning … but also within my group workshops.

No. 8) Doe painting help you connect with your higher self, whatever that may be for you?

Essentially. My worship of forms, which I perceive as eternal fragments, and their integration into my work and group workshops is a way to establish this “connection” …

No.9) Many people believe that schools kill creativity. What is your opinion on this?

To continue in the same frame of mind, essentially creativity it is an private activity … what school or group workshops offer are beneficial in terms of a reference made of the various modes and styles which serve as basis in order to recognize the value of one’s own language. In other words, school must provide the necessary tools to encourage the performance of individuals in the exercise of self-growth through their own pictorial language.

No. 10) What would be a simple solution if you are of the same opinion?

In my opinion, school should not be the ultimate place to create, but rather a place of unlimited access to the most effective tools, to help one put together the best conditions for innovation, thus strengthening his own personal search and creative pathway.

No. 5)  Lorsque tu peins, tu crées, comment te sens-tu?

No. 7)  Dans quel contexte fais-tu ton meilleur travail?

About

My name is Michele Andree. I am an artist, I paint musicians in action. I think I’m a musician at heart, my instrument being… a brush, so I play…brush and I paint… music.
I love jazz. I call it freedom music. It promotes special values. I love intelligent people and good conversations.

Some people ask me how music relates to art. Personally I find they go hand in hand. Music is what turns me on to painting. It makes me see colours
