GIANMARIO GASPARRONI ON THE WAY TO JAZZ!
GIANMARIO GASPARRONI was born in 1968 and started studying the piano at age 6, for about seven years. “Perhaps, says Gianmario, I was too young (and I was not a great talent, even if my teacher had high hopes on me). When I left the studies , I had already started playing guitar and I was passionate about West Coast Music (Neil Young, CSN & Y, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, etc..). Then the first musical groups with whom we played the same music. From there I started to write some pieces and tried to realize a few. however, I began to broaden my musical horizons, blues, bossa nova, original Brazilian music and, finally, jazz. My approach to jazz has been through a few artists who still love Rickie Lee Jones, for example, Tom Waits or Joe Jackson. The discovery of the record label ECM did the rest. From this love I have not really moved and Ralph Towner (alone and with the group Oregon), and Egberto Gismonti have become my teachers. I feel that sound very exciting, free and creative. One year and a half ago I started studying jazz guitar and I think that this road is still long. but I have patience and perseverance.
Sono nato nel 1968 (il 18 Maggio) e ho iniziato a studiare il pianoforte all’età di 6 anni, per circa 7 anni. Forse ero troppo giovane (e non ero un gran talento, anche se la mia insegnante nutriva forti speranze per me). Quando lasciai gli studi avevo già iniziato a suonare la
chitarra ed ero appassionato della West Coast (Neil Young, CSN & Y, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, ecc.). Poi vennero i primi gruppi musicali con i quali suonavamo la stessa musica. Da li l’inizio della composizione ed il tentativo di riprodurre musiche originali. Comunque, iniziai ad allargare i miei orizzonti musicali.. blues, bossa nova, musica brasiliana d’autore e, alla fine, jazz. Il mio approccio al jazz è avvenuto attraverso alcuni artisti che ancora amo molto. Rickie Lee Jones, per esempio, Tom Waits o Joe Jackson. La scoperta dell’etichetta ECM ha fatto il resto. Non mi sono più mosso da Ralph Towner (da solo o con il suo gruppo Oregon) e Egberto Gismonti, che sono diventati i miei maestri. Sento questa musica molto eccitante, libera e creativa. Un anno e mezzo fa ho iniziato a prendere corsi di chitarra jazz e penso che questa strada sia ancora molto lunga, ma io ho pazienza e perseveranza.

No. 1) What is music to and for you? (generally and personally)
Music is an art form often very representative of the culture from which it came. For this reason it provides important keys to the understanding of different peoples, different eras and different countries. In this sense it is able to help racial and cultural integration and, in general, increase the ability to understand and tolerate (what an ugly word!) in all those who love it. I mean, you can know a lot of things about different countrird only by listening to its music. Music is something that arouses different emotions in me. Sometimes it works as a smell that can bring memories and make me relive them, other times it can give me energy and happy thoughts. Music is very important to me.
Cos’è la musica per te? (in generale e personalmente)
La musica è una forma d’arte molto rappresentativa della cultura da cui proviene. Per questo motivo fornisce importanti chiavi per la comprensione di popoli diversi, diverse culture e periodi storici. In questo senso può aiutare a superare problemi di integrazione razziale e, in generale aumenta la capacità di comprendere e tollerare (che brutta parola !!) nelle persone che la amano. Voglio dire, è possibile conoscere molte cose in paesi diversi solo ascoltando la loro musica. La musica mi da emozioni diverse. Alcune volte funziona come un profumo che può portarmi indietro a ricordi e esperienze e mi permette di riviverle, altre volte mi dà energia e buoni pensieri. La musica è molto importante per me.
No. 2) What inspires you?
Many times emotionally stressful situations inspire me but it seems everything happens unconsciously. I mean, it’s difficult to decide to write, more simply, I find myself doing, and only then I can realize why. Somehow it represents a form of liberation, as when you need to talk but the words you would like to use do not exist. I’m not able to think about what I write, it just happens, and many times it surprises me too. however it is something that rarely happens.
Che cosa ti ispira?
Spesso, alcune situazioni stressanti emozionalmente mi ispirano, ma sembra che tutto accada inconsciamente. Intendo, è difficile decidere di scrivere musica, più semplicemente, mi accorgo che lo sto facendo, e solo dopo realizzo perché. Ad ogni modo rappresenta una forma di liberazione, come se hai bisogno di parlare ma le parole che vorresti usare non esistono. Non sono capace di pensare a cosa scrivo, semplicemente accade, a molte volte sorprende anche me. Comunque è qualcosa che accade raramente.
No. 3) When you are playing, creating, where does it take you? Where does your
mind travel?
Not easy to answer .. As I said before. It is instinctual and the mind runs behind the notes .. I mean, often I follow what happens instinctively. It is a particular condition .. and often, it is hard to believe it is the result of my work. However, when it happens, it’s wonderful .. I feel a great satisfaction.
Quando stai suonando, componendo, dove sei? Dove va la tua mente?
Non è facile rispondere.. come ho detto prima, è istintivo e la mente corre dietro le note.. spesso io seguo quello che accade istintivamente. E’ una condizione particolare.. e spesso è difficile credere che è frutto del mio lavoro. Comunque, quando accade, è meraviglioso… una grande soddisfazione.
No. 4) Do you think music, painting and health are related and if so, how?
Each art form has definitely a correlation. I think they have the same source but different languages??, never far away. it is not uncommon that a painting inspires me some music and music suggest images to me. In the past I have painted some pictures and the music often played in my head. Physical condition is undoubtedly also reflected in music and art in general. I plan to say that the psycho-physical condition, and even your health can affect your art work with different results. Important artists have had several productions depending on the state of their health.
Pensi che la musica, la pittura e la salute abbiano relazioni e se si, in quali termini?
Ogni forma d’arte ha necessariamente una correlazione. Penso tutto abbia la stessa fonte ma differenti linguaggi, mai troppo lontani fra loro. Non è raro che un dipinto mi ispiri un tema musicale e una musica mi suggerisca immagini. In passato ho dipinto e la musica spesso suonava nella mia testa. La condizione fisica ha indubbiamente un impatto nella musica e nelle arti in generale. Voglio dire che le condizioni fisio-psichiche, e anche la tua salute possono condizionare i tuoi lavori ed ottenere risultati diversi. Artisti importanti hanno avuto produzioni artistiche differenti, dipendenti dal loro stato di salute.
No. 5) How do you feel when you are playing, for yourself versus for an audience?
Occurred infrequently, however, I remember it was very difficult to get rid of stress and emotion and letting go .. However, even then, if the audience is attentive you create a particular condition and your expression is freed.
Come ti senti quando stai suonando, per te stesso o per il pubblico?
Non accade frequentemente, comunque, ricordo che era molto difficile allontanare lo stress e l’emozione e lasciarsi andare.. comunque, anche adesso, se il pubblico è attento, puoi creare la giusta condizione per liberare la tua espressività.
No. 6) Do you identify with your music and if so, on what level?
Yes, I identify with my music but I’m never satisfied. I think there is always something that I could make it better .. but I’ve learned to be more lenient with myself. I try to repeat myself: “create, play what you like to listen to !!” .. but the result is always different. I fear there is no rule .. all you can do is listen to yourself while you are composing .. and I think this is the only affordable level, maybe because I still have to study hard and learn about music, but if you are creating should just listen.
Ti identifichi con la tua musica e se è così, a che livello?
Si, mi identifico con la mia musica ma non sono mai soddisfatto. Penso ci sia sempre qualcosa che potrei fare meglio… ma ho imparato ad essere molto più tollerante con me stesso. Cerco di ripetermi: “crea, suona quello che ti piacerebbe ascoltare!!” .. ma il risultato è sempre differente. Temo non ci sia una regola… tutto quello che puoi fare è ascoltare te stesso mentre stai componendo… e io penso che sia il solo modo possibile, forse perché ho ancora da studiare duro e imparare molto sulla musica, ma se tu stai componendo dovresti saperti ascoltare.
No. 7) Under what conditions do you work best?
Sometimes it seems I need some time and serenity, but I agree that something good has come out of a state of rush and stress .. sometimes you wait a moment of joy to let you go to the music but nothing happens .. I can say in general that even here there is no rule, even though the melancholy or sadness seems a more generous source of inspirations.
In quali condizioni lavori meglio?
Alcune volte sembra io abbia bisogno di tempo e tranquillità, ma qualcosa di buono è arrivato quando ero in uno stato di stress e avevo poco tempo… alcune volte aspetto un momento di gioia per lasciarmi andare alla musica ma nulla accade… posso dire in generale anche qui, non c’è una regola, anche se la malinconia o la tristezza sembrano più generose di ispirazioni.
No. 8 ) Does playing music help you connect with your “higher self” whatever that is for you?
I realized only after I have made something that I really like, that there is something beyond my understanding. in the end I listen with incredulity, as if something had come from elsewhere. It is as beautiful as it is rare.
Suonare ti aiuta a connetterti con il tuo “sè superiore” ?
Realizzo solo dopo aver composto qualcosa che realmente mi piace, che c’è qualcosa oltre la mia consapevolezza. Alla fine ascolto io stesso con incredulità, come se qualcosa sia arrivato da altri luoghi. E’ tanto bello quanto raro.
No. 9) How do you feel about creativity in the public school system?
In the Italian school system there is nothing that stimulates creativity. the academic environment is shaped patterns that repeat over time and draw on the concert tradition. which can be an excellent basis for study, but does not offer any contribution to the development of your expression in the composition. Italy is still too academic in this regard.
Cosa pensi in merito alla creatività nel sistema pubblico scolastico?
Nella scuola italiana non c’è nulla che stimoli la creatività. L’apparato accademico propone standards tratti dalla tradizione concertistica e si ripete continuamente. Può essere un’eccellente base per lo studio ma non garantisce alcun contributo per la crescita della tua espressività nella composizione. L’Italia è ancora troppo accademica in tal senso.
No. 10) In your opinion, what could be a simple solution to improve creativity in the school system?
Leave more space for playing and experimentation. There’s always time to understand what you’re playing, and it is not always necessary to find out why. Start to play, listen, copy and then let go, there will come a time when you’ll want to analyze and definen what you played. Playing is paramount.
Secondo te, quale potrebbe essere una semplice soluzione per accrescere la creatività nel sistema scolastico?
Lasciare più spazio al gioco e alla sperimentazione. C’è sempre tempo per capire cosa stai suonando, e non è sempre necessario realizzare perché. Inizia a suonare, ascolta, riproduci e poi lasciati andare, arriverà un tempo che vorrai analizzare e trovare citazioni in quello che hai suonato. Il gioco è fondamentale.
No. 11) What is jazz to you?
Mainly freedom. Live jazz means playing with total freedom, having forgotten all the rules of music. To reach this goal so, you must have assimilated everymusic rulec. This kind of freedom of expression is therefore only by a profound awareness. seems a contradiction in terms, but this is the way. Jazz, in this sense, is to achieve freedom.
Che cos’è il jazz per te?
Soprattutto libertà. Vivere il jazz significa suonare con totale libertà avendo dimenticato le regole della musica. Per raggiungere questo livello, devi comunque aver assimilato tutte le regole. Questo tipo di libertà di espressione viene solo da una profonda consapevolezza. Sembra una contraddizione in termini, ma è la sola via. Il jazz, in questo senso, è arrivare alla libertà.
No. 12) How do you feel about improvisation?
This is very difficult for me to answer. I’m studying jazz and I am in a very sensitive stage, I guess. I need to let me go but at the same time I need to understand. Improvisation should be the creation of a new writing music within a piece, a song in the song. I still have a lot of work ..
Come ti senti quando improvvisi?
molto difficile per me rispondere. Sto studiando jazz e sono in un livello molto sensibile, penso. Ho bisogno di lasciarmi andare ma allo stesso tempo ho bisogno di capire. L’improvvisazione dovrebbe essere la creazione di un nuovo tema musicale all’interno dello stesso pezzo, una canzone nella canzone. Ho ancora molto lavoro davanti…
