ELOI AMESSE is a violinist, pianist, creator of wide open sound spaces and songs without words, accompanist, fiddler and teacher who has continued to explore and develop his art and share it since he started walking. He is currently working on a mini album with les Jolies Alian Babes and he also does his best to get the Merry Widows’ public dancing!
ELOI AMESSE est un violoniste, pianiste, créateur de grand espace sonore et de chansons sans paroles, accompagnateur, bidouilleur et professeur qui n’a cessé d’explorer et de développer son art et de le partager depuis qu’il sait marcher. Il est actuellement en train de mijoter un mini album avec les Jolie Alian Babes et s’applique à faire danser le public des Veuves Joyeuses!
Eloi, bonjour, hello and welcome. Thank you so much for participating in this project. Your input is important so let’s get right to it:
No. 1) What is music to and for you? (generally and personally)
Music is above all a language, music was there before speech in humanity’s
history. For me, it’s easier to speak with an instrument than with the words. And words can so easily confuse us that they are too often the cause of terrible misunderstandings. With sounds, I speak from and to the heart. Music is something that I miss very much if for some reason I am unable to do any for several days. It is like an obligation to create beauty to compensate foe all the destruction and ugliness and the overwhelming globalization of our cruel world.

No. 1) Qu’est-ce que la musique pour toi?
La musique c’est avant tout un langage, la musique est d’ailleurs venue avant la parole dans l’histoire de l’humanité… Pour moi, c’est plus facile de m’exprimer avec un instrument qu’avec les mots. Et les mots portent si facilement à confusion qu’ils sont trop souvent la cause d’horribles malentendus. Avec les sons, je m’exprime par et pour le coeur. La musique c’est quelque chose qui me manque si par malheur je suis empêché d’en faire pendant plusieurs jours. C’est une obligation de créer de la beauté comme pour palier à toute la destruction et à la laideur écrasante et globalisante de notre monde cruel.
No. 2) What inspires you?
This is the question of a lifetime! If I knew I would always inspired! But I understand over the years that inspiration comes while working. Inspiration, what is it really? And if it was just a way of saying that you feel free? That there are no more than barriers to keep out the true substance within us to go out and vibrate?
No. 2) Qu’est-ce qui t’inspire?
C’est la question de toute une vie! Si je le savais, je serais toujours inspiré! Mais je crois comprendre avec les années que l’inspiration vient en travaillant. L’inspiration, qu’est-ce que c’est vraiment? Et si ce n’était qu’une façon de dire qu’on se sent libre? Qu’il n’y plus de barrières pour empêcher la vrai substance en nous de sortir et de vibrer?
No. 3) When you are playing, creating, where does it take you? Where does your mind travel?
When I play I try to be the music … When I think of what one might say or think of me, or I think of a mistake or anything else but the notes that I assemble and harmony with other musicians while I play, I’m doing crap! For music to live, we must totally give ourselves to it, and we must listen completely to the others and to the whole, including the public.
No. 3) Lorsque tu crées, joues, où cela t’amène-t-il? Où voyage ton esprit?
Lorsque je joue j’essais d’être la musique… Lorsque je pense à ce qu’on pourrait dire ou penser de moi, ou que je pense à une erreur ou n’importe quoi d’autre que le propos des notes que j’assemble et de l’harmonie avec les autres musiciens pendant que je joue, alors je suis en train de faire de la merde! Pour que la musique vive, il faut se donner à elle entièrement et il faut avoir une écoute complète des autres et de l’ensemble, y compris le public.
No. 4) Do you think music, visual art and health are related and if so, how?
Yes in that art is born of freedom. I believe that freedom steers away from many evils, psychological as well as physical. But then who is really completely free? Art can certainly become our own tyrant when we become obsessed and isolated from other essential life activities.
No. 4) Crois-tu que la musique, les arts visuels et la santé sont reliés et si oui, comment?
Oui dans la mesure où l’art naît de la liberté. Je crois que la liberté éloigne de bien des maux, psychologiques mais aussi physique. Mais qui est vraiment complètement libre? L’art peut certainement aussi devenir notre propre bourreau lorsqu’il nous obsède et qu’il nous isole des autres activités essentielles de la vie.
No. 5) How do you feel you when you are playing for yourself versus for an audience?
When I play alone, I’m bold, I seek and explore areas where there is more risk of mistakes … while for an audience, I keep the limit of exploration a little lower without however preventing myself from going there. It is clear that the public gives me an answer by listening and will contribute to the direction of the show … For example, a public that is very communicative, that dances and is suspended on my notes will give me so much energy that the music it will be electrif
ied, vitalized, furious! An audience with a more passive listening to music will lead to something more cerebral …
No. 5) Comment te sens-tu lorsque tu joues pour toi-même versus jouer pour un public?
Lorsque je joue seul, je suis plus audacieux, je cherche et explore des zones où il y a plus de risque d’erreurs…tandis que pour un public, je garde la limite de l’exploratoire un peu moins haute sans toute fois m’empêcher d’y aller. C’est clair qu’un public me donne une réponse par son écoute et va contribuer à la direction du spectacle… Par exemple, un public très communicatif, qui dance et qui est suspendu à mes notes me donnera tant d’énergie que la musique s’en verra électrisée, vivifiée, endiablée! Un public avec une écoute plus passive dirigera la musique vers quelque chose de plus cérébrale…
No. 6) Under what conditions do you work best?
The best working conditions are lucidity, the complete absence of tension in my life and the physical environment where I work and the assurance of having a time range long enough to avoid having to interrupt the session when I’m warmed up and at my best.
No. 6) Dans quelles conditions ton travail est-il le meilleur?
Les meilleurs conditions de travail sont la lucidité, l’absence complète de tensions dans ma vie et l’entourage physique d’où je travail et l’assurance d’avoir une plage de temps assez longue pour ne pas avoir à interrompre la session au moment où je suis réchauffé et à mon meilleur.
No. 7) Do you identify with your music and if so, on what level?
I gone through phases where I identify with certain styles of music, like at 20, I listened to jazz, I was completely fascinated by this music. Something in it resonated with me at that time. Did I identified with the music or was it more that I got excited for this style? Because today, I love jazz but I still do not identify with that. I played a lot of it but then was turned on by a different style and I fell in love with electro, acid jazz, trip hop and company …
Today I do not identify with these styles either! I am currently obsessed with Bach’s sonatas and partitas for solo violin … but I do not identify with that. And even for my compositions, there is not one that I identify myself to because I believe that music is at the present time, constantly changing. To identify with the music, I would have to remain faithful to one style, fixed in a sound, closed to change … No way!
No 7) Est-ce que tu t’identifies à ta musique et si oui, à quel niveau?
Je vis des phases où je m’identifie à certains styles de musique, comme à 20 ans, je n’écoutais que du jazz, j’étais complètement passionné par cette musique. Quelque chose là-dedans était en phase avec moi, à ce moment là. Est-ce que je m’identifiais à cette musique ou bien est-ce que je me passionnais plutôt pour ce style? Parce qu’aujourd’hui, j’adore encore le jazz mais je ne m’identifie pas à ça. J’en ai joué beaucoup puis un autre style m’a happé et je suis tombé en amour avec l’électro, l’acid jazz, le trip hop et compagnie… Mais aujourd’hui je ne m’identifie pas à ces styles non plus! Actuellement, je suis obsédé par les sonates et partitas de Bach pour violon seul… mais je ne crois pas m’identifier à cela. Et même pour mes compositions, il n’y en a pas une pour laquelle je m’identifie car je crois que la musique est au moment présent, en perpétuel changement. Pour m’identifier à une musique, il me faudrait être fidèle à un seul style, figé dans un son, fermé au changement… jamais de la vie!
No. 8) Does playing music help you connect with your higher self, whatever that is for you?
Euhmmm! I do not understand the concept of “Higher Self”! If you mean: Does music help you to get you out of reality or an ambient dream, then yes, it is a way of being elsewhere, not to think …
No. 8) Est-ce que jouer de la musique t’aide à communiquer avec ton “Je” supérieur, quoi que cela puisse représenter pour toi?
Euhmmm!!! Je ne comprend pas la notion de “je” supérieur! Si tu veux dire: Est-ce que la musique t’aide à te sortir de la réalité ou du rêve ambiant, alors oui, c’est une façon d’être ailleurs, de ne plus penser…
No. 9) How do you feel about the use of creativity in the public
school system?
I believe that here in Quebec, although it is not required in the programs, it is always the teacher who finally has the power to suggest it, to help each of his students discover it within themselves and cultivate it without having to abandon the famous program. The teacher has the privilege of giving students a taste for Creativity, be it by being an example him or herself and using his own creativity to teach.
No. 9) Que penses-tu de la créativité au sein du système scolaire? (utilisation de la créativité dans la résolution de problème disons des élèves)
Je crois qu’ici au Québec, bien qu’elle ne soit pas exigée dans les programmes, c’est toujours le professeur finalement qui a le pouvoir de la suggérer, de la faire découvrir à et en chacun de ses élèves et de la cultiver sans même avoir à délaisser le fameux programme. Le professeur à ce privilège de donner le goût de la créativité ne serais-ce que par l’exemple, en usant de sa propre créativité pour enseigner.
No. 10) In your opinion, what could be a simple solution to improve creativity in the public school system?
I think the lack of creativity in the whole of society is inversely proportional to his massive rate of sleepwalkers which is more or less directly related to an eternal search of facility. And today, there is always an easy to push button to solve one’s problems. What an extraordinary illusion! But for a simple solution for more creativity in schools, I see no easier one than to change society altogether!!! Children are innately creative. They play constantly. Creativity is playing, imagining. At school, they no longer have the right to play, they learn to fit into the mold …
No. 10) Selon toi, quelle serait une solution simple pour améliorer la créativité au niveau du système scolaire?
Je crois que le manque de créativité dans la société au grand complet est inversement proportionnel à son pharamineux taux d’endormissement qui lui est ni plus ni moins dû à l’éternelle recherche de la facilité. Et de nos jours, il y a toujours un bouton sur lequel il est facile de peser pour régler son problème! Quelle extraordinaire illusion! Or, pour une solution simple pour plus de créativité dans les écoles, je ne vois pas plus simple que de changer la société au grand complet! Les enfants sont créatifs de façon innée. Ils jouent constamment. La créativité, c’est jouer, imaginer. À l’école, ils n’ont plus le droit de jouer, ils apprennent à rentrer dans le moule…
No. 11) How do you feel about improvisation in music?
It’s like an unexpected trip, not prepared. We face the tempo with only our experience as baggage. And our motor is a story to be told. Without a story it’s like a trip without encounters. That being said, it’s very hard to be relevant and not always fall back on the same patterns without substance while improvising. Good improvisation is when there are only surprises, discoveries and 
encounters. A story!
No. 11) Que penses-tu de l’improvisation dans la musique?
C’est comme un voyage imprévu, pas préparé. On fait face au tempo avec comme seul bagage notre expérience. Et notre moteur c’est l’histoire à compter. Sans l’histoire, c’est comme un voyage sans rencontre. Ceci dit, c’est très difficile d’être pertinent et de ne pas tomber toujours dans les mêmes motifs sans substance en improvisant. Une bonne improvisation c’est lorsqu’il n’y a que des surprises, des découverte et des rencontres. Une histoire!
No. 12) What is jazz to you?
The music of black America, the music that made improvisation evolve to new incredible heights, Monk, Jarrett, Miles, the poetry of the city at night …

La musique des noires d’Amérique, la musique qui à fait évoluer l’improvisation à des sommets incroyable, Monk, Jarret, Miles, la poésie de la ville le soir…
