ALICIA MB BALLARD FROM THE CORE!(1)
ALICIA MB BALLARD, an extraordinary lady who has had an eventful life from being born in Argentina, to living in Uruguay to moving to White Rock, B.C. Canada… where she has been socially, politically and culturally active most of her life! Alicia overcame loosing her sight for over a period of ten years to finally return to her first love which is painting. “My art is an extension of my soul, of the core of my being, with all its intricacies, contradictions and harmonies” says Alicia. She currently works out of her centrally located StudioGaleria in White Rock where she receives visitors and clients by appointment – as it is also her residence.
Alicia, welcome and thank you for sharing so much. Thank you also for making this interview accessible to not only our Spanish speaking readers but also Italian speaking readers. This is going to make a lot of people happy! Let us begin with our questions in this PART ONE, of your article.
No.1 What is art (painting) for and to you?
Art, painting, as any aesthetic manifestation, is pure and simple nourishment for the soul.
We have, as a society, been slowly but steadily loosing that understanding. We have all but eliminated the appreciation for what is aesthetically fulfilling, have lost the instinctive “hunger” for it, opting for the quick-fixes that are so pervasive in most other areas of contemporary life.
Personally, I cannot live without a high aesthetic component in my life… Beauty, does not need to be a synonym of happy, but it does have to be a synonym of excellence…
No.1 Que significa el arte (la pintura) para ti?
El arte, la pintura, significa para mi, como qualquier manifestacion estética, nada más ni nada menos que alimento para el alma. Nuestra sociedad ha estado poco a poco, continuamente, perdiendo éste conocimiento.
Hemos eliminado casi completamente el aprecio por todo aquello que es estéticamente satisfactorio, hemos perdido el apetito instinctivo por él, optando por lo rápido, lo inmediato, que es tan prevalente en otros aspetos de la vida contemporanea.
Personalmente, no puedo vivir sin un alto componente estético en mi vida. La belleza no es necesarimente sinónimo de alegria, felicidad… más bién, es sinómo de exelencia.
No.1 Cosa significa L’arte (la pittura) per te?
L’arte,la pittura, significa per me, come qualsiasi manifestazione estetica, niente di più che il cibo dell’anima.
La nostra società è stata pian piano perdendo questa conoscenza.
Abbiamo eliminato, quasi completamente , d‘apprezzare tutto quello esteticamente soddisfacente. Abbiamo scelto quello più veloce, immediato, presente ed accentuato in altri aspetti della vita contemporanea.
In maniera personale, non posso vivere senza il concetto estetico nella mia vita. La bellezza , non è neccessariamente, sinonimo di gioia, felicità… più che altro sinonimo d’eccellenza.
No.2 What inspires you?
My reactions to people’s energies, nature, politics, social trends… All my works are life metaphors; there is a strong story behind all of them and, their titles reflect the thoughts and feelings involved.
No.2 Que es lo que te inspira?
Me inspiran mis reacciones a las energías de la gente, la naturaleza, la política, las ondas sociales….
Todos mis trabajos son metáforas de la vida; hay una historia detráz de cada uno de ellos, sus nombres reflejan los pensamientos y emociones que me llevaron a el.
No.2 Cosa ti dà inspirazione?
Mi inspirano le mie reazioni, l’energia della gente,la natura, la polìtica, i movimenti sociali.
Tutti i miei lavori, sono come metafore della vita, cé una storia dietro d’ognuno di loro, i suoi nomi specchiano i mie pensieri , le mie emozioni che mi hanno portato verso lui.
No.3 When you are painting, creating, where does it take you? Where does your mind (spirit) travel?
Painting, brings to my experience possibly the high athletes feel. A sensual, soothing, nurturing, completely fulfilling high. The same sort of moving elation an exquisite musical piece or, a mountain high deep wood “solitude” may give. I call it “the zone”, where nothing else matters but the pure joy of the creative process/the aesthetic manifestation. While, at the same time, being an intellectual and emotional odyssey – one, in which the intricacies of each process enriches me each every step.
No.3 Cuando pintas, creas, a dónde te lleva el proceso? Donde viaja tu mente (espíritu)?
Mi experiencia del proceso es probablemente similar a la del “alto” al que refieren los atletas. Algo así, como una sensación sensual, tambien de calma, nutriente, una de estar completamente contento/satisfecho.
Ese mismo tipo de exaltación sublime que uno pueda sentir al escuchar una especial pieza musical o, lo que se llega a sentir en la solitud de un bosque profundo por la cima de una montaña…
Me refiero a ella como a “la zona”, donde nada más importa que el puro júbilo del proceso/la manifestación estética, en cuando al mismo tiempo es también una odisea intelectual y emocional que enriquese a cada paso.
No.3 Cuando dipingi, crei, dove ti porta il tuo processo? Dove viaggia , la tua mente , il tuo spirito?
La mia esperienza nel processo , si può paragonare, al massimo che riferisconi gli atleti. Così come una sensualità, calma, il nutrimento per essere completamente soddisfato e gioioso.
Queste tipo di eccitazione sublime, può assomigliarse al ascoltare una musica, il suono del silenzo del bosco nella cima d’una montagna.
Faccio riferimento alla “Zona”, dove niente è più importante che la gioia del processo, la manifestazione estetica. Inoltre allo stesso tempo, è anche una odisea intelletuale, ed emozionale che si arrichisce ad ogni passo.
No. 4) Do you think music, visual art and health are related and if so, how do you see that?
Absolutely. Any time, any thing – particularly certain paintings and certain music – relax and stimulate the senses in a positive manner/giving pleasure… nurturing and healing at the same time.
Music and painting are spontaneous childhood and, ancient practices that date back to our early days as humans.
I conclude that sound and color, are intrinsic balancing components in our lives, most likely firmly entrenched at our cellular level along millennia.
As an aside, I seldom paint in silence, there is always music on, aiding and supporting me, while it permeates and shades my work.
No.4 Crees que la pintura, la música y la salud están relacionadas de alguna manera? Si estás de acuerdo, como la vez?
Estoy absolutamente de acuerdo. A todo momento, todo – particularmente, ciertas obras y ciertas músicas – relajan y estimulan los sentidos de una manera positiva, brindando placer, alimentando, sanando al mismo tiempo. Lo opuesto o negativo, es también aplicable.
La música y la pintura son prácticas espontáneas que remontan a nuestra infancia, a nuestros primeros dias como humanos.
Concluyo que el color y sonido son componentes intrinsecos de nuestras vidas, posiblemente atrincherados a nivel celular a lo largo de los milenios.
Ilustrando mi caso, casi siempre pinto con música, la cual me apoya, inspira, penetra y, sombrea mis trabajos…
No.4 Credi che la pittura, la musica e il benessere, hanno una relazione fra loro in qualcuna maniera.? Sei d’accordo e come sarebbe?
Sono assolutamente d’accordo. In qualsiasi momento, tutto in particolare certe opere, e certi suoni, rilassano ed estimolano, i sensi in una maniera positiva, dandoci piacere, alimentando, e guarendo nello stesso tempo. L’opposto negativo e anche applicabile.
La musica e la pittura sono allenamenti spontanei che ci riportano alla nostra infanza, ai nostri primi giorni come umani.
Finisco affermando che il colore e il suono sono componenti che stanno dentro la nostra vita, possibilmente, racchiusi a livello cellulare nell ‘arco dei milleni.
No. 5) How do you feel when you are painting, creating?
Utterly content. In a state of “bliss”… I even forget to eat! And that, is particularly good for me, because I tend to be an emotional eater. Unfortunately, I get tired, stop, make up for what I missed, and more!
On the lighter side of things, I am always very hot while working, I find it is a highly “physical” activity – I have come to fully understand and imitate Picasso in matters of keeping cool while working. hahaha
No.5 Como te sientes cuando estás pintando, creando?
Total y absolutamente en la gloria! En un “estado de gracia” en el cual hasta
me olvido de comer! Y eso, es particularmente favorable para mi, que tengo el apetito guiado por mis emociones. Desafortunadamente, me canso, paro y, como por lo que no comí todo el día, y más!
Pero más gracioso aún, es el hecho que me acaloro mucho – al igual que Picasso – también me pongo cómoda y fresca como el.
No.5 Come ti senti , quando dipingi , e quando crei?
Totalmente ed assolutamente avvolta nella gloria. In uno stato di grazia, nel quale posso dimenticarmi anche di mangiare, che ho la fame il quel momento guidata dalle mie emozioni.
Sfortunatamente, mi stanco, e quando mi fermo, mangio tutto quello che non ho mangiato durante la giornata.
Però ancora più gioiso è il fatto che mi riscaldo troppo, uguale a Picasso, mi metto comoda e mi raffresco come Lui.

Creo que Alicia Ballard es una de las màs importantes creadoras contemporàneas. Su estètica es distinta a todo lo conocido. Sus paisajes multicolores denotan una mirada diferente. Quizàs sus ojos, intensamente celestes proveen el filtro necesario.
